Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State used the 2025 Children's Day celebration to underscore his administration's commitment to youth development, rewarding academic and athletic achievements while issuing a stern warning against cultism. The day, marked by the thrilling finals of the Governor's Cup for secondary schools, served as a platform to emphasize the collective responsibility in ensuring child safety and fostering a positive environment for the state's young population.
Addressing a vibrant gathering at Ogbe Stadium, Governor Okpebholo reiterated his "zero-tolerance" stance on cultism in schools, imploring students to reject such harmful activities and focus on realizing their potential. He emphasized the government's dedication to empowering students through increased teacher recruitment and the provision of digital skill acquisition opportunities.
"Say no to cultism," the Governor urged, stressing the importance of nurturing dreams and creating safe learning environments.
In a powerful demonstration of his commitment to education, Governor Okpebholo announced significant cash prizes for outstanding academic achievements.
He awarded five million Naira each to two exceptional girls from Itohan Girl's Grammar School who secured second place nationally in the NDDC Quiz Challenge. "Excellence deserves to be celebrated beyond our borders," he stated, promising to sponsor future winners in international competitions.
The Governor also recognized the athletic prowess of the state's secondary school students by donating two Hiace buses. Ogbe Secondary School, the winning male football team, and India College, the winning female team, each received a bus, acknowledging their hard work and dedication.
The Governor's Cup finals, a highlight of the day, showcased intense competition and athletic talent. In the female category, India College, Benin City, triumphed over St. Angela's Grammar School, Jattu, with a 1-0 victory. The male category final saw Ogbe Secondary School, Benin City, emerge victorious against St. Peter's Grammar School, Agenebode, in an equally thrilling match.
Earlier in the day, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Emmanuel Paddy Iyamu, set the tone by emphasizing the crucial roles of government, schools, parents, and communities in safeguarding children. He stressed the importance of parental engagement and encouraged students to report bullying, fostering a supportive and secure environment.
The 2025 Children's Day celebration served as a potent reminder of the collective responsibility to protect and empower the younger generation. Speakers reinforced calls for parents and guardians to remain actively engaged in their children's lives, for teachers to foster kindness and discipline, and for community leaders to drive awareness on child safety.
