BENIN CITY, EDO – In a significant policy shift aimed at enhancing educational and moral development, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced his administration's commitment to returning missionary schools to their original owners.

The governor revealed plans to establish a dedicated committee that will identify specific institutions across the state eligible for handover to missionary organizations.

Governor Okpebholo made the announcement on Monday during a visit by Bishop Gabriel Dunia of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi to Government House in Benin City.

According to his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Fred Itua, the move signifies a responsive approach to long-standing appeals from religious bodies.

However, the governor clarified that schools currently undergoing renovation by the state government would remain under state supervision until all rehabilitation works are completed. This ensures that the significant investments made in these institutions by the government are fully realized before any handover takes place.

Notable examples of such institutions include Our Lady of Fatima College, St. Angela's Grammar School, and St. John Grammar School, all of which are reportedly undergoing extensive renovation.

Bishop Gabriel Dunia, in his earlier remarks, expressed the Church's persistent efforts to reclaim its educational institutions, noting that previous administrations had allegedly not responded positively to their multiple appeals.

The Bishop underscored the critical role these schools play, not only in fostering academic excellence but also in providing the moral upbringing essential for shaping responsible and value-driven citizens within society.

The decision to return these schools is anticipated to be a welcome development for various missionary organizations in Edo State, who have long advocated for their reinstatement to better align educational curricula with their core values and moral teachings. The formation of the committee marks the first concrete step in realizing this key policy objective of the Okpebholo administration.
