Edo State Sows Seeds of Agricultural Revolution Under Governor Okpebholo's Leadership

BENIN CITY, EDO STATE – A transformative agricultural revolution is taking root across Edo State, signaling a new era of purpose-driven governance under the visionary leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo. From the fertile lands of Edo South to the expansive farmlands of Edo Central and the agricultural heartland of Edo North, the hum of tractors heralds a significant shift in farming practices and food production.

Governor Okpebholo has placed agriculture at the core of his administration's "SHINE Agenda," a comprehensive framework encompassing Security, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Natural Resources & Agriculture, and Education. His commitment to revitalizing a long-neglected sector is drawing widespread commendation, as he translates bold visions into tangible progress.

Upon assuming office in November 2024, Governor Okpebholo inherited an agricultural sector hampered by outdated practices and chronic underfunding. 

In a decisive break from the status quo, he dramatically increased the sector's allocation in the 2024 budget from a modest ₦4.5 billion to an unprecedented over ₦70 billion. This historic financial commitment underscored his administration's readiness to invest in real transformation.

This substantial investment swiftly activated the "Back-to-Farm" initiative, which has already cleared vast hectares of land and delivered modern farming equipment, including 18 state-of-the-art tractors, to all senatorial districts.

In Edo South, where farming is deeply ingrained in the local culture and economy, the introduction of mechanization has been nothing short of revolutionary. Fields once tilled laboriously by hand are now rapidly cultivated by tractors, allowing farmers to increase planting capacity and expedite harvests.

 Similarly, in Edo Central, previously abandoned land is now alive with renewed promise, with farmers anticipating higher yields and the potential for surpluses to bolster local consumption, inter-state trade, and even exports. For Edo North, the shift from crude tools and limited support services to commercial-scale agriculture offers farmers a genuine opportunity for prosperity.

The SHINE agenda provides the holistic framework for this transformation. 

Under Security, farmland corridors are being protected and reinforced by a better-trained and equipped State Security Corps. The State Livestock Control Committee is actively working to prevent farmer-herder conflicts, ensuring a safer environment for agricultural activities. Improved food availability and nutrition, stemming from increased production, are expected to boost Healthcare.

Furthermore, Governor Okpebholo is developing Infrastructure by opening up rural roads and constructing vital storage facilities to minimize post-harvest losses. The optimization of Natural Resources & Agriculture is being pursued through the use of climate-resilient seeds and the deployment of trained extension workers.

 Under Education, young people are being drawn back to farming through curriculum-linked school farms and targeted youth empowerment programs, transforming agriculture into a viable and dignified profession.

For Governor Okpebholo, this initiative is more than just an agricultural policy; it's a social and economic movement.

 It's creating jobs across the entire agricultural value chain, from tractor operators and technicians to transporters and processors. Women are being integrated into cooperatives, gaining access to interest-free credit, essential tools, and training. Youths who once dismissed farming are now re-engaging with new enthusiasm, recognizing it as a profitable career path.

Governor Okpebholo's leadership is characterized by direct engagement, attentive listening, and sincere, precise action. His efforts are restoring the dignity of farmers, redefining the value of land, and rebuilding public confidence in leadership. His name resonates across Edo not merely due to party affiliation, but because of the palpable, people-focused results his administration is delivering.

While challenges such as machinery maintenance, fuel financing, and consistent security persist, the administration is proactively addressing them. Strategic partnerships with financial institutions are unlocking soft loans, capacity-building programs are training local operators and agripreneurs, and community-led surveillance initiatives are safeguarding vital assets.

The upcoming harvest seasons are poised to bear witness to the wisdom of this policy direction. Food output is expected to rise, food prices will stabilize, and rural economies will be revived. With each passing day, Edo State is moving closer to achieving its rightful place as Nigeria’s agricultural pacesetter.

In a country where ambitious agricultural initiatives have often faltered due to neglect or mismanagement, Governor Okpebholo's approach stands out for its seriousness, structure, and sincerity. Tractors are being acquired for work, not political optics. Farmers are being empowered, not just promised. And agriculture is being actively practiced and prioritized, not merely discussed in the abstract.

This is more than an agricultural strategy; it is a restoration of Edo’s identity as a land of wealth, work, and wisdom.
