– In a significant diplomatic gesture, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has been conferred with the prestigious title of Knight Commander of the Order of Saint Lucia (KCOSL) by the government of Saint Lucia. This honorary knighthood, one of the highest national honors bestowed by the Caribbean nation, was officially approved by the Governor General of Saint Lucia following the advice of Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre.
The conferment took place during President Tinubu's historic state visit to Saint Lucia, which commenced on Saturday as the first leg of his two-nation tour of the Caribbean and South America.
Upon completion of the formal investiture, President Tinubu will be officially styled as H.E. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, KCOSL (Hon.), President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Office of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia stated that the honor recognizes President Tinubu's "exceptional leadership on the African continent, his commitment to advancing South-South cooperation, and his efforts at rekindling cultural, historical, and diplomatic ties with the Caribbean." This recognition underscores a shared vision for global South solidarity, rooted in the historical connections and future collaboration between Africa and the Caribbean.
During his visit, President Tinubu addressed a special joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly of Saint Lucia, where he announced the establishment of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Saint Lucia.
He described this as a "symbolic bridge" to foster closer ties and proposed the creation of a Joint Commission or Political Consultation Agreement to facilitate structured cooperation between Nigeria and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
The conferment of the KCOSL on President Tinubu is seen as a deepening of the historical and cultural bonds between Nigeria and Saint Lucia, and a testament to the growing re-engagement between Africa and the Caribbean under Nigeria's "Renewed Hope Agenda" foreign policy.
