THE MASSES ADVOCATE............Elumelu Champions "Triple Threat" Strategy: Media, Intelligence, Diplomacy Unite Against Disinformation
-By Ruben Mario Brodrick
Abuja, Nigeria – At a landmark gathering in Abuja, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, former Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, unveiled a compelling vision for safeguarding Nigeria's future: a robust collaboration between the media, intelligence agencies, and diplomatic corps to aggressively combat the rising tide of disinformation.
Addressing the maiden International Diplomatic and Security Conference, hosted by the Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association of Nigeria (DICAN), Elumelu characterized disinformation as a potent "weapon" demanding immediate, coordinated action.
Before an esteemed audience of diplomats, security experts, policymakers, and journalists, Elumelu passionately articulated that Nigeria's democratic integrity and international reputation hinge on this "triple threat" synergy.
"Disinformation travels faster than the truth," he observed, underscoring that a united front is essential to successfully counter harmful narratives and preserve the national image.
The conference, themed "Nigeria’s 4Ds Foreign Policy Strategy Amidst Global Security Challenges," provided the perfect backdrop for Elumelu to elaborate on the strategic significance of the 4Ds: Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography. He urged that these pillars be actively transformed from mere concepts into practical tools for expanding Nigeria's global reach and strengthening internal cohesion.
Elumelu emphasized, "Our democracy and development must serve as foreign policy currency." He further highlighted the imperative to strategically involve Nigeria's vibrant diaspora and burgeoning youthful population in shaping a positive national narrative on the international stage.
Commending DICAN for orchestrating such a crucial forum, Elumelu called upon the government and relevant stakeholders to equip the media with the vital tools needed to fulfill its role as a reliable watchdog.
His recommendations also included fostering deeper partnerships with international allies, bolstering domestic intelligence capabilities, and investing in nationwide media literacy programs.
As Nigeria confronts a landscape of complex global challenges, from cyber warfare to climate-induced migration, Elumelu's core message resonates clearly: proactive, unified action is paramount to ensure the nation controls its own story and destiny.
The conference also featured insightful panel discussions on digital diplomacy, strategies for countering global misperceptions, and the role of intelligence in shaping foreign relations, all reinforcing the urgency of Elumelu's collaborative approach.
