A Shepherd, Scholar, and Servant: Very Rev. Fr. Jerome Idebe Celebrates 15 Years of Priestly Service
-By Ruben Mario Brodrick
BENIN CITY, NIGERIA – The air was filled with song and joyful praise as the faithful gathered to celebrate the 15th ordination anniversary of Very Rev. Fr. Jerome Idebe. Under the theme, "Look What the Lord Has Done – The Lord is My Strength and My Shield," the celebration paid tribute to a remarkable journey of faith, service, and dedication that has touched countless lives.
The homily, delivered by Very Rev. Fr. Benjamin Brodricks, the Dean of Iguobazuwa Deanery, was a powerful testament to Fr. Idebe’s ministry. He highlighted Fr. Idebe's journey from a promising student to a dedicated priest, emphasizing that his path was not a matter of human choice, but a divine calling, likening his anointing to that of the prophet Isaiah.
"He had the talent and intelligence to chase any worldly career," Fr. Brodricks stated, "but like Peter and Paul, he left the boat and the nets and followed Jesus."
The celebration wasn't just a nod to the passage of time; it was a recognition of a "divine covenant" sealed on July 3, 2010. Over the past 15 years, Fr. Idebe has exemplified the meaning of a priest "forever in the order of Melchizedek," through his tireless work as a parish priest, hospital administrator, and chaplain to numerous societies.
His impact extends beyond spiritual guidance, as he has been a prolific builder of churches, hostels, and classrooms, and the author of two powerful books, The Beautiful Prayer and Truths in the Wind.
A Celebration of Faith and Fellowship
The solemn mass was presided over by the Archdiocesan Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Oyanoafoh, who ably represented the Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze. He was joined by a host of high-ranking priests and clergy, reflecting the deep respect and admiration for Fr. Idebe's service.
The festivities were vibrant and spirited. A special thanksgiving session and the cutting of the anniversary cake were highlights of the day. The atmosphere was further enlivened by a scintillating performance from the El Exceess Corale and a captivating display of cultural dances by the Uroboh group, adding a beautiful, local flair to the ceremony.
*A Priest with a Difference*
Described as a "gift to the Church," Fr. Idebe was lauded for embodying the teachings of Ephesians 4, which speaks of pastors and teachers given to the Church.
Despite his academic achievements—including a Master’s degree, studies in Jerusalem, and a current pursuit of a PhD—he remains grounded and approachable. "He is not just gifted," Fr. Brodricks proclaimed, "he is grounded."
Fr. Idebe's unique approach to ministry was also a central theme. Beyond his powerful preaching and wise leadership, he was celebrated for his down-to-earth nature, even his love for football and his support for Chelsea F.C. This blend of spirituality and humanity was highlighted as a key to his connection with the community. He was praised for being a "builder, yet spiritual" and a "footballer, yet a preacher."
The celebration concluded with heartfelt gratitude to Fr. Idebe for his unwavering "Yes" to God's call. The crowd offered prayers for his continued strength, renewed like the eagle, and for his fire to never quench. As the community rejoiced, the final message from Fr. Brodricks was one of powerful thanksgiving: "He called Jerome, He trained him, He sent him, and He is still using him!"
The celebration of Fr. Idebe's 15 years of priesthood stands as a testament to a life lived in full, joyous, and fearless service to God and humanity. The hope remains that when the time comes, heaven will say of him, "Well done, good and faithful servant."
