Two Millennial Saints, One Timeless Message: Holiness Is Found in the Ordinary

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

In a powerful conversation with the Register, Antonia Acutis, the mother of soon-to-be-saint Carlo Acutis, discusses her son’s shared path to holiness with Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati. The two young men, who lived in different eras but will be canonized together on September 7, offer a compelling and timely message for today’s youth: sainthood isn't about grand mystical experiences, but about living a life of heroic virtue in the everyday.
Antonia Acutis highlights the striking similarities between Carlo and Pier Giorgio. Both were from wealthy families but were dedicated to serving the poor and sick.

They were deeply committed to the Eucharist, attending daily Mass and Eucharistic adoration, and had a great love for the Virgin Mary. Acutis states, “They were both really fun, brilliant and full of life,” and shared a passion for math and science, using their intellectual gifts to serve God.

Acutis challenges the traditional, often somber, view of saints, explaining that they are not superhumans but simply human beings who fought against their defects. She emphasizes that holiness is "in the ordinary," a lesson she hopes the double canonization will teach the world.
The interview also touches on the challenges facing young people today, from the dangers of pornography to the decline of faith in the family. Acutis believes the lives of Carlo and Pier Giorgio can serve as a powerful counter-example, showing young people that a virtuous life is the path to true happiness and fulfillment.

As Acutis says, her son’s exhibit on Eucharistic miracles has already planted countless "invisible seeds" that may one day blossom into faith.

The canonization is simply the official recognition of what Carlo is already doing: answering prayers and bringing souls to Christ.

What do you find most inspiring about the lives of Carlo Acutis and Pier Giorgio Frassati?
