UBTH Gets New Chief: President Tinubu Taps Esteemed Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu to Lead Teaching Hospital

Benin City, Edo — The University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) is set to welcome a new leader as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Idia Nibukun Ize-Iyamu as its new Chief Medical Director.



 The appointment, which takes effect on August 18, 2025, will see Professor Ize-Iyamu take over from the outgoing CMD, Professor Darlington Obaseki, bringing over 27 years of dedicated service to the institution's top leadership role.

A Career of Distinction and Global Expertise
Professor Ize-Iyamu's journey at UBTH is one of steady progression and deep institutional knowledge. She joined the hospital in 1997 as a Junior Registrar and climbed the ranks to become an Honorary Consultant in 2005.

 Her leadership skills were further cemented during her more than eleven years as a respected Head of Department, where she was widely known for her integrity and results-oriented approach.

Beyond her administrative roles, Professor Ize-Iyamu is a distinguished educator and clinician.

 As a Commonwealth Fellow and a Craniofacial Orthodontist, she gained international experience at prestigious medical centers, including the Oxford University Teaching Hospital in the UK and the University of Washington in the USA.

 This global exposure is expected to be a key asset in her mission to introduce modern innovations and best practices to UBTH.

A Patient-Centered Vision for the Future
Currently serving as the Dean of the School of Dentistry at the University of Benin, Professor Ize-Iyamu has earned a reputation for being an effective leader, attracting crucial public-private partnerships and significantly improving infrastructure and staff welfare. 

Her vision for UBTH is centered on transforming healthcare delivery by prioritizing patient-first service, quality assurance, and strategic innovation.
Under her leadership, the hospital is expected to undergo significant upgrades, including: Modernizing facilities and expanding specialist services, Strengthening accountability and staff motivation, Adopting technology-driven solutions and dynamic partnerships.

 Expanding community outreach to ensure medical services are accessible and efficient for all.

Widespread Support for the Appointment:
The appointment has been met with praise from key government officials. 

Meanwhile, Hon. Dr. Richard Edosa of the Edo State House of Assembly has expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for making a merit-based appointment that reinforces Nigeria's healthcare sector. 

The Honourable Minister of Health was also acknowledged for supporting a seamless leadership transition.

Importantly, Governor Monday Okpebholo was commended for his progressive leadership and dedication to healthcare, which aligns with the President's Renewed Hope Agenda. 

With the combined support of the federal and state governments, UBTH is poised to reach unprecedented heights as a center for medical excellence and pioneering research.
