In a significant legal victory against cybercrime, the Edo State High Court in Benin City has sentenced eight men to prison for internet fraud. The convictions came after the defendants pleaded guilty to charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Justice M. Itsueli delivered the judgment on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, convicting the offenders on separate charges that included advance fee fraud and possessing fraudulent documents. The men—identified as Friday Osamudiamenwen, Monday Moses, Wisdom Idahosa, Osazuwa Oghomwen, Christopher Victor, Odion Desmond Osas, Monday Louis Adagboyin, and Bright Ogbiede—each received a two-year jail term. The court also offered them the option of paying fines ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦300,000.
Beyond their sentences, the court ordered the forfeiture of their assets used in the crimes, including their phones and laptops, as well as the funds traced to their bank accounts. The EFCC stated that the arrests were made following credible intelligence that revealed their involvement in various online scams.
In a final measure, the convicts were required to sign undertakings promising to be of good behavior after their release.
