AEF Symposium Lights Up Warri: A Day of Breakthroughs Against Epilepsy Stigma

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick
The Angie Epilepsy Foundation (AEF) achieved a landmark success with its One-Day Symposium in Warri, Delta State, held on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, at the Mother of Redeemer Catholic Church, Effurun.

Under the crucial theme, “The Knowledge, Attitudes and Perception of Epilepsy in Nigeria,” the event galvanized a powerful, multidisciplinary effort to combat the ignorance and stigma surrounding the neurological condition.

Unprecedented Turnout & Spiritual Mandate for Empathy
The symposium was not merely well-attended, but recorded a massive, enthusiastic turnout, demonstrating a unified community front against epilepsy discrimination. The distinguished attendance included a cross-section of influential figures: medical doctors, pharmacists, seasoned clergy, traditional chiefs, and youth leaders.

The day’s proceedings, skillfully overseen by Chairman Mr. Ochko Amrabiure and Host Sir Moses Yasere KSM MGK, were blessed by an inspiring address from the Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido. The Bishop delivered a moving message, framing the fight against stigma as a spiritual and moral obligation. He emphatically urged all attendees to champion empathy, inclusion, and love for persons living with epilepsy, reminding the community that this condition is a medical issue, not a spiritual curse.

In-Depth Knowledge Sharing and Expert Perspectives
The core of the event lay in the high-impact educational sessions, which provided comprehensive, evidence-based insights:

Very Rev. Fr. Dr. James Urien offered a critical examination of the socio-spiritual barriers facing people with epilepsy, challenging traditional myths and advocating for pastoral care that integrates medical realities.

Sr. Veronica Odunlami Ola focused on the community and social support systems, detailing practical strategies for family care, school inclusion, and workplace accommodation.
Dr. Ewere Marie Ogbini delivered a crucial presentation on the latest medical advancements in diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing the high success rates achievable with consistent medication and proper seizure first aid.
The presentations empowered attendees with accurate facts, directly countering harmful public misconceptions about the condition.

Solidifying the 'Wear Purple, Help People' Mission
In her heartfelt closing remarks, Mrs. Angela Okiafoe Asoera-Asemota, Founder and President of AEF, expressed profound appreciation for the solidarity shown. She underscored that the symposium was a vital step forward in the Foundation's enduring mission to ensure every Nigerian with epilepsy receives respect and access to proper care.

The day concluded with an energized atmosphere as distinguished guests and honorees—including representatives from key regional NGOs—formally pledged their continued financial and moral support for ongoing epilepsy advocacy. The event was universally hailed as a remarkable success, significantly boosting public awareness and uniting the community under the banner of AEF’s signature “Wear Purple, Help People” campaign.
