China Blasts US Over Nigeria Military Threat, Backs Tinubu's Sovereignty

By Ruben Mario Brodrick -November 4, 2025

China has forcefully intervened in the growing diplomatic crisis between Nigeria and the United States, urging the international community to respect Nigeria's sovereignty following threats of military action from the US.

The escalating tension stems from recent statements attributed to US President Donald Trump, who reportedly threatened to deploy military forces in the West African nation unless the alleged persecution of Christians is halted.

Beijing's Strong Stance

Speaking at a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered a stern rebuke to the US position. She explicitly reaffirmed Beijing’s "strong support" for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and commended the Nigerian government for "leading its people on a development path suited to its national conditions."

Mao Ning made clear that China views the US threat as a blatant infringement on a sovereign nation's rights.

“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another country’s internal affairs, or to threaten it with sanctions and military force,” Mao stated.

A Defense of Non-Interference

Reiterating a core principle of Chinese foreign policy, Mao stressed that every nation holds the right to choose its own development path free from external pressure or coercion.

“China stands with Nigeria in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and stability,” she added, effectively positioning Beijing as a key diplomatic ally to Abuja in the face of mounting Western criticism.

This assertive statement underscores a deepening geopolitical alignment between China and African nations. It highlights a recurring theme where Beijing offers diplomatic and economic support—often framed by its policy of non-interference—in contrast to Western powers that frequently tie aid and relations to domestic governance and human rights compliance. The diplomatic move from Beijing is a significant demonstration of this strategy amid heightened global tensions concerning Nigeria's internal affairs.
