BENIN CITY – In a vibrant display of communal joy and spiritual reflection, the Archbishop’s Court played host to the 2025 Archbishop’s Appreciation Christmas and End-of-the-Year Party on Friday, December 26th.

In a remarkable gesture of "sharing the joy," the Archbishop also announced that he would be sharing the gifts he received during the Yuletide season with those in attendance, further emphasizing the spirit of Christian charity.

The event, which coincided with Boxing Day and the Feast of St. Stephen, brought together lay leaders from across the Archdiocese of Benin City for an afternoon of celebration, reflection, and fellowship.

A Message of Unity and Forgiveness

In his keynote address, the Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, Archbishop of Benin City, expressed deep-seated gratitude to the Laity for their tireless dedication to their various parishes throughout the year.

Drawing inspiration from the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the Archbishop delivered a moving reflection on the power of forgiveness:

"For us to enjoy Christmas joy and peace for a long time, we must forgive those who do us wrong," the Archbishop stated. "Forgiveness removes the obstacles blocking the peace of Christ in our lives. I pray for the grace for all of us to let go of offenses so that the Lord’s love may remain with us always."

Recognition of the Laity’s Role

The President of the Archdiocesan Laity Council, Mr. Roland Osunde, lauded the Archbishop for his consistency. He noted that since his assumption of office, Archbishop Akubeze has never failed to host this annual gathering.

  • A Call to Action: Mr. Osunde described the feast as a "message of encouragement," telling the faithful: "You have done well, now go ahead and do even more."
  • Pastoral Support: The Vice Chairman of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council echoed these sentiments, describing the party as a vital bridge between the Archbishop and the parishioners, fueled by the cooperation between the laity and their parish priests.

Celebration and Fellowship

The Bishop’s Court was filled with an atmosphere of festivity as guests were treated to a lavish spread of food and drinks. The event served not only as a thank-you gesture but also as a strategic moment for lay leaders from different regions to network and strengthen the bonds of the Archdiocesan family.

As the year draws to a close, the Archbishop urged everyone to continue praying for the growth of the Church and the peace of the Archdiocese.
