Blood on Christmas Eve: Deadly Blast Hits Maiduguri Mosque During Prayers
A wave of terror has gripped the Borno State capital following a devastating improvised explosive device (IED) blast at a mosque in the Gamboru Ward, located near the busy Customs area.
The explosion occurred at approximately 6:10 p.m. on Wednesday, just as worshippers gathered for the Maghrib sunset prayer.
The timing of the attack is particularly chilling, occurring less than 12 hours before the start of Christmas Day, a period when the city is usually on high alert.
While official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, the scene has been described by local residents as one of utter devastation.
Eyewitnesses reached by telephone reported that many worshippers were either killed instantly or sustained severe injuries as the blast ripped through the Juma’at Mosque.
The Borno State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, stated that while he could not yet confirm the exact scale of the tragedy, he was on his way to the site to lead a preliminary assessment and coordinate with emergency teams.
In the wake of the explosion, security forces have heavily cordoned off the Gamboru area to prevent further casualties and allow anti-bomb squads to sweep the vicinity.
The incident has cast a dark shadow over the 2025 Christmas celebrations, sparking widespread fear within both the Muslim and Christian communities.
As residents retreat to their homes in an atmosphere of heightened anxiety, the attack serves as a grim reminder of the persistent security challenges in the Northeast, contrasting sharply with the national messages of peace and unity shared by leaders earlier in the day.
