Breaking: NAWOJ Edo Elects Habiba Sam as New Chairperson, Vowing to Foster Unity and Collective Growth
Benin City, Edo State – December 5, 2025
– The National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State Chapter, has inaugurated a new executive council following the election of Habiba Sam as its new Chairperson. The election, held today, marks a significant turning point, which Mrs. Sam has already pledged will usher in an era of unity and collective progress for women journalists in the state.
New Chairperson's Mandate: Bridging Gaps: Until her election, Habiba Sam, a Correspondent for the Akwa-Ibom Newspaper to Edo State and Secretary of the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN) in the Archdiocese of Benin City, was described as "deeply humbled and privileged" by the trust placed in her.
In her inauguration speech, delivered on Friday, December 5, 2025, the new Chairperson laid out her core vision:
"My focus will be on bridging gaps and fostering unity among NAWOJ members across all chapels, driving collective progress and growth for our Association... Today, we celebrate a major turning point for NAWOJ, Edo State Chapter, as we begin a new era united and in harmony."
She committed to continuing NAWOJ’s long-standing role in ensuring Nigerian women have a strong voice in politics, governance, education, health, and economic well-being, urging all members to contribute their skills and expertise.
The new leadership team, which will serve for the next three years, comprises experienced women professionals from diverse media organizations across Edo State.
Other elected executive include Oyemwense Odeh (Edo Broadcasting Service - EBS) as Vice-Chairperson, Joy Ebuanekpe (Edo State Information and Strategy) as Secretary, Joyce Odiase Alohan (Joyce TV) as Assistant Secretary, Iyabo Osagiede (Federal Radio Cooperation of Nigeria - FRCN) as Treasurer,
Others are, Elizabeth Omokor Owotuoma (Nigerian Television Authority - NTA) as Financial Secretary, and Anita Erhenhi Okunkpolo (GTV) as Auditor.
Adesuwa Ehimuan Hands Over: A Legacy of Impact:
The immediate past Chairperson, Adesuwa Ehimuan, formally handed over the reins with a speech reflecting on a tenure defined by impactful social initiatives and strong collaborations.
She highlighted several key achievements:
- Pad-A-Girl Initiative: Organized for World Menstrual Hygiene Day, providing essential products and education to young girls.
- Preventive Healthcare: Facilitation of a free breast and cervical cancer screening exercise for NAWOJ members.
- Advocacy: Active participation in the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
- Strategic Partnerships: Strong collaborations with sister bodies, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN).
Ehimuan thanked her dedicated executives and all NAWOJIANS for their support, expressing confidence that the incoming leadership would sustain and improve upon the work started.
NUJ Charges NAWOJ on Ethics
Comrade Dr. Festus Alenkhe, Chairman of the Edo State Council of NUJ, highlighted the important role of NAWOJ within the state media council. He urged the new executive and all members to remain united in promoting the ethical values of the media profession, ensuring the association continues to uphold the highest standards of journalism.
