Kaduna NUJ Expresses Confidence in Defence Nominee Gen. Musa, Calls for Transparency in Northern Security Funding

By Ruben Mario Brodrick

KADUNA, North-West Nigeria—The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kaduna State Council, has expressed strong confidence in the Defence Minister nominee, General Christopher Musa, stating that based on his track record as the former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), he will not disappoint Nigeria in addressing the security situation in the country. The Congress, which rose from its monthly meeting, also appreciated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the honour done to Kaduna State with the nomination of the former CDS.

The council’s deliberations focused heavily on regional security, leading them to commend a recent meeting of the 19 Northern States governors who converged in the state to address important issues. However, the Congress raised concerns regarding the proposed security fund, observing that the $19 billion Naira which will be gathered from all the 19 northern states every month is "on the high side." They strongly urged the governors to adopt proper utilization measures and transparency, suggesting that the money should be put to proper use to eliminate the menace and should not be used to pacify bandits. To enhance regional security, the Congress called on the Northern states' governments to concentrate on building or establishing strike forces in strategic areas so that even when bandit incidents occur, these strategically positioned task forces will be able to contain them. Furthermore, they urged the northern governors to identify authentic vigilante and other volunteer security outfits to keep forests and communities safe.

Addressing local issues, the Congress appreciated the Kaduna State Government for quickly rounding up school calendars and closing up primary and secondary schools as a necessary security measure to protect children and schools across the state from the spate of banditry and kidnapping. The state government was also commended for the restoration of monthly sanitation across the state for hygiene purposes and environmental cleanliness. However, the council expressed worries that despite the huge amount of money spent on installing new pipes for portable water supply, there is no water flowing on the pipes. The Congress also called on the Kaduna State Government to ensure strict adherence to the state's development Plan and stop ongoing constructions near roads, especially at Ibrahim Yakowa way in Chikun LGA.

Internally, the Congress commended NUJ members for their commitment to duty, urging them to compliment government efforts, especially in the fight against insecurity. Finally, the Congress resolved to request the National Secretariat to consider the Immortalization of Colonel Tanko Ayuba, the then governor of the state who was instrumental in the actualization of the NUJ Secretariat in Kaduna in 1984, so that his legacy will be ever remembered. Members were also urged to be patient as the issue of full accreditation of the NUJ International Institute of Journalism is at a final stage, which will allow them to use the certificate for career progression in their various organizations and for induction as full members of the union.
