Outrage in Benin: Obaseki Family Condemns "Barbaric" Daylight Assault and Public Humiliation of Media Icon, Don Pedro Obaseki

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The Obaseki Family Worldwide has broken its silence to voice a blistering condemnation of the mob violence and public humiliation recently meted out to their son, Dr. Don Pedro Agbonifo Obaseki.

Describing the incident as a savage violation of fundamental human rights and a grave threat to the rule of law, the family expressed profound shock at the "commando-style" operation that unfolded in broad daylight on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Dr. Obaseki, a highly respected journalist and former Managing Director of DAAR Communications, was reportedly accosted by armed individuals at the Uwa Primary School football field in Benin City.

According to harrowing eyewitness accounts, the assailants—who the family clarified were neither palace functionaries nor agents of the state—subjected the media executive to a brutal physical assault and intimidation before forcefully marching him toward the Palace of the Oba of Benin.

In a joint statement signed by the Okaegbe, Pa. Daniel Igbinovia Obaseki, and the Family Secretary, Mr. Ewere Obaseki, the Council explained that they had intentionally delayed their reaction to properly investigate the "bizarre" incident, but felt compelled to speak out after disturbing footage of the assault began circulating in the public domain.

They characterized the filmed humiliation of an accomplished professional and cultural ambassador as a "savage" act that is wholly antithetical to the discipline and peace for which Benin is known.

While reaffirming their deep-seated respect for the Palace of the Oba of Benin as a moral compass for the people, the family warned that non-palace actors must not be allowed to undermine the sanctity of the traditional institution through lawlessness.

Emphasizing that their stance is rooted in justice rather than politics, the Obaseki Council has called for an immediate and impartial investigation by authorities, vowing full support for Dr. Obaseki as he seeks legal redress to ensure that the rule of law triumphs over the rising tide of jungle justice.
