Edo Government Breaks Silence on Ekpoma Protests, Unveils Governor Okpebholo’s Security Roadmap

EKPOMA – The Edo State Government has officially responded to the recent wave of protests in Ekpoma, urging residents to prioritize "constructive engagement" over street demonstrations that disrupt public order.

​In a statement released on Sunday, January 11, 2026, the Honorable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Prince Kassim Afegbua, clarified the administration’s stance following Saturday’s protests, which saw major roads blocked by citizens frustrated with local insecurity.

​The Government’s Core Stance

​While acknowledging the constitutional right to protest, the state government warned that blocking highways and disrupting vehicular movement could backfire. The Commissioner noted that such actions:

  • ​Hinder Security Operations: Roadblocks prevent security agencies from moving swiftly during emergencies.
  • ​Increase Public Risk: Large, uncoordinated gatherings can be exploited by the very criminal elements the public is protesting against.
  • ​Distract Law Enforcement: Resources are diverted from fighting crime to managing traffic and crowd control.

​Governor Okpebholo’s Security Strategy

​The statement emphasized that Governor Monday Okpebholo is fully aware of the safety concerns in Ekpoma and across Edo State. According to the Commissioner, the administration is moving away from "unstructured actions" in favor of a data-driven, community-focused security model.

​Key pillars of the current strategy include:

  1. ​Strengthening the Edo Security Corps: Increasing personnel and equipment for local enforcement.
  2. ​Neighborhood Watch Initiatives: Empowering grassroots security to act as the "eyes and ears" of the community.
  3. ​Cross-Border Collaboration: Constant synergy with traditional institutions and neighboring states to track criminal movement.
  4. ​Intelligence Sharing: Encouraging residents to use official channels to report suspicious activities rather than taking to the streets.
