Fr. Ogunyinka Takes the Helm: A New Chapter for the Nigerian Catholic Chaplaincy in England and Wales

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has officially ushered in a new era of spiritual leadership for the diaspora community with the appointment of Rev. Fr. Michael Sunday Ogunyinka as the Lead Chaplain of the Nigerian Catholic Chaplaincy in England and Wales.

Taking effect on January 1, 2026, this significant appointment sees Fr. Ogunyinka, a highly regarded priest of the Diocese of Ijebu-Ode, stepping into a role that is pivotal for the pastoral coordination and ecclesial communion of Nigerian Catholics living abroad.

Known for his seasoned experience and administrative competence, Fr. Ogunyinka’s background in parish leadership and diocesan management has earned him a reputation for pastoral prudence, making him uniquely qualified to guide the clergy and faithful within the jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of Westminster.

This transition follows the successful completion of the tenure of Rev. Fr. Alexander Izang Atu, a priest of the Archdiocese of Jos, who led the chaplaincy with distinction until December 31, 2025.

During his time in office, Fr. Atu was instrumental in fostering unity and community-building, providing devoted sacramental ministry and pastoral accompaniment to Nigerians across the region.

The CBCN has expressed its deep-seated appreciation for Fr. Atu’s faithful service, noting that his ministry was defined by sacrifice and a profound sense of responsibility.

As Fr. Ogunyinka begins his new mission, the Conference has called upon the faithful to support both the incoming and outgoing chaplains with prayers, while reiterating its gratitude to the Archdiocese of Westminster for its enduring support and pastoral care for the Nigerian Catholic community in the United Kingdom.
