NEW DELHI, India – In a significant move toward strengthening Nigeria’s electoral integrity through international partnership, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, is currently participating in the India International Conference on Democracy and Election Management.

The three-day high-level summit, which commenced on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, brings together nearly 500 global delegates, including heads of Election Management Bodies (EMBs), legal experts, and academics, to tackle the evolving challenges of modern governance.

A Global Vision for Resilient Elections

Organized by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in collaboration with International IDEA, the conference marks a pivotal moment as India’s Chief Election Commissioner, Mr. Gyanesh Kumar, assumes the Chair of the International IDEA Council for 2026.

Under the theme “Democracy for an Inclusive, Peaceful, Resilient and Sustainable World,” the gathering serves as a laboratory for global best practices. Dr. Kevin Casa-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA, emphasized that the goal is to foster a "shared global vision" rooted in the philosophy that the world is one family.

Key Highlights of the Summit

The conference is structured around two critical pillars:

  1. Reimagining Democracy for the Future: Adapting to 21st-century shifts.
  2. Professional EMBs: Strengthening independent commissions as the bedrock of sustainable democracy.

Experts from prestigious institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) and National Law Universities are joining election officials to dissect high-stakes issues, including:

  • The AI Frontier: Managing Artificial Intelligence and the threat of misinformation.
  • Electoral Technology: Modernizing polling and counting processes.
  • Inclusivity: Ensuring every voice is heard in the democratic process.

Professor Amupitan Advocates for Balanced Legal Frameworks

Representing Nigeria on the global stage, Professor Amupitan contributed to a plenary session focused on the laws governing electoral democracies. Accompanied by Professor Ibrahim Sani, Acting Director-General of The Electoral Institute (TEI), the INEC Chairman addressed the delicate balance of election laws.

"We must develop legal frameworks that are not only enforceable and context-sensitive but also strengthen electoral integrity without compromising fundamental democratic freedoms," Amupitan stated.

Why This Matters for Nigeria

Participation in this summit reinforces INEC’s commitment to electoral reform. By engaging with peers from across the globe, the Commission aims to bring home innovative strategies for voter registration, campaign regulation, and risk management.

As the conference continues through January 23, the insights gained in New Delhi are expected to play a vital role in shaping the future of Nigeria’s electoral landscape, ensuring it remains resilient against emerging global threats.
