ABUJA, Nigeria — In a landmark move for legal education, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote as the new Director-General of the Nigerian Law School. This appointment marks a historic "first," as Dr. Odusote becomes the first woman to lead the prestigious institution since its inception 64 years ago in 1962.

A New Chapter in Legal Leadership

The President’s approval, announced on January 6, 2026, signals a transition of power at the helm of the nation's primary legal training body. Dr. Odusote, 54, will officially begin her four-year tenure on January 10, 2026. She succeeds Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, who concludes an impactful eight-year term on January 9.

The Profile of a Trailblazer

Dr. Odusote is not a stranger to the inner workings of the Nigerian Law School. Before this historic promotion, she served as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus.

Her academic and professional journey is a testament to merit and excellence:

  • Education: An alumna of Obafemi Awolowo University (LL.B and LL.M), specializing in company and commercial law.
  • Global Expertise: Holds a PhD in Law from the University of Surrey, UK, and served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University.
  • Experience: Since joining the Nigerian Law School in 2001, she has climbed every rung of the academic ladder, from Lecturer to Director of Academics.

Strategic Vision and Responsibilities

As the new Director-General, Dr. Odusote will be the primary custodian of academic standards across all law school campuses in Nigeria. Her role is pivotal to the "Renewed Hope" agenda’s focus on judicial reform and inclusivity.

She will serve as the critical link between the Law School and Nigeria's top legal authorities, including:

  1. The Council of Legal Education
  2. The Body of Benchers
  3. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA)

Industry Reaction

The legal community has reacted with overwhelming positivity. Experts and practitioners view this appointment not just as a victory for gender representation, but as a strategic choice that places a seasoned academic and administrator in charge of the next generation of Nigerian lawyers.
