Kano Political Earthquake: Governor Abba Yusuf Leads Mass Defection to APC

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s political corridors, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has officially dumped the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The transition, announced on Monday at the Coronation Hall in Government House, Kano, was not a solitary move. In a high-stakes display of political realignment, Governor Yusuf was accompanied by a "tsunami" of lawmakers, including 22 out of 24 members of the State House of Assembly and nine members of the Federal House of Representatives.

A Strategy of "Partnership Over Polarization"

Addressing a packed hall of party stalwarts and supporters, Governor Yusuf framed the defection as a calculated move for the benefit of Kano’s citizens rather than mere political maneuvering.

"We are choosing partnership rather than polarization," the Governor declared. "Political parties are merely vehicles; our ultimate destination is to bring positive change to the people of Kano. I ask that you judge this decision by the work we do for our people."

He emphasized that the decision was reached following exhaustive consultations with elected representatives and veteran stakeholders who felt that aligning with the center was the fastest route to accelerating development in the state.

A New Leadership Era in Kano

The event marked a rare moment of public reconciliation and unity. Former APC National Chairman and former Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who has long been a rival of the Yusuf administration, formally welcomed the Governor into the fold. In a significant gesture of party protocol, Ganduje declared Yusuf the new leader of the APC in Kano State, pledging the 100% loyalty of the party structure.

Other heavyweights in attendance included:

  • Senator Barau Jibrin, Deputy President of the Senate.
  • Hon. Abubakar Kabiru Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.
  • Abdullahi Abbas, Kano State APC Chairman.

Senator Jibrin urged his supporters to set aside previous rivalries and rally behind the Governor to ensure a "progressive and prosperous" future for the state.

The Implications

This mass defection effectively hands the APC total control over one of Nigeria’s most voter-rich states. By absorbing the bulk of the state and federal legislature along with the executive branch, the APC has solidified its stronghold in the North, leaving the NNPP to face an uncertain future in its former powerhouse.
