Oborevwori’s Infrastructure Revolution: Delta Breaks Ground on N59.7bn Agbor/Uromi Flyover to End Decades of Traffic Carnage
AGBOR – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has launched a definitive strike against one of the Niger Delta’s most perilous traffic bottlenecks. On Monday, the Governor performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the N59.7 billion Agbor/Uromi Junction Flyover, a massive infrastructure project designed to permanently dismantle the gridlock and fatal accidents that have long plagued the Ika South Local Government Area.
A Lifeline for the "Artery of the Niger Delta"
Describing the project as a "lifeline," Governor Oborevwori emphasized that the Agbor/Uromi intersection is far more than a local road; it is a vital national corridor. As the primary gateway linking Lagos and the West to the East and Northern Nigeria, its dysfunction threatens the national economy.
The Governor noted that the intersection had become a "disaster zone" where the volatile mix of heavy-duty federal traffic, local motorcycles, and pedestrians created a constant risk to life and property. By "unleashing" this colossal investment, the administration aims to obliterate these "traffic nightmares" and replace them with a seamless flow of commerce and commuters.
Engineering Excellence and Local Impact
The contract has been awarded to the industry titan Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a strict 14-month deadline for completion. The project is an engineering marvel that includes a 1.3-kilometre flyover bridge, dual-lane carriageways, integrated ramps, and modern roundabouts. To ensure long-term sustainability and safety, the project will also feature advanced drainage systems to combat erosion and cutting-edge solar street lighting.
Beyond the physical structure, the Governor highlighted the immediate economic stimulus this project provides. The construction site is expected to become a hub of activity, creating hundreds of jobs for engineers, laborers, artisans, and local vendors, effectively injecting fresh capital into the Ika South economy.
A Broader Vision for Delta State
The Agbor/Uromi Flyover is a centerpiece of a much larger development strategy. During the ceremony, Governor Oborevwori revealed a N100 billion special intervention fund, which allocates N4 billion to each of the state’s 25 local government areas to ensure balanced growth. This is in addition to ongoing projects in Ika South, such as a N15.4 billion flood control initiative and a N12 billion road upgrade program.
Echoes of Support
The ceremony was a gathering of high-profile leaders who rallied behind the Governor’s vision. Former Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa hailed the project as a monumental feat of continuity and progress. Meanwhile, Mr. Frederich Weiser of Julius Berger pledged that the firm would deliver world-class quality with minimal disruption to the public, drawing on their successful track record with the Ughelli Flyover.
The project has also garnered inter-agency and bipartisan support, with the NDDC pledging to improve feeder roads and local leaders calling the flyover a "destiny-defining masterpiece" that will restore hope to the region.
