A New Era for Ahiara: Bishop Nwobi Scraps Decades-Old Internship Program, Sets Bold Vision for 2026 and Beyond

AHIARA, NIGERIA – In a landmark Presbyterium meeting held on February 12, 2026, the Catholic Bishop of Ahiara Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Simeon Okezuo Nwobi, CMF, unveiled a transformative roadmap for the Diocese, signaling a season of structural change, spiritual renewal, and liturgical discipline.

The End of an Era: Owerri Province Abolishes Internship Program

The most significant highlight of the meeting was the announcement that the Owerri Provincial Catholic Bishops have officially abolished the one-year internship program for seminarians.

Established around 2004, the program required seminarians to undergo an additional year of service after completing their four-year theological studies. With this two-decade-old tradition coming to an end, Bishop Nwobi brought joy to the Presbyterium by announcing a "double promotion" for candidates. Consequently, 13 candidates—comprising both the current interns and the final-year theology students—will be ordained as Deacons together on Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 11:00 AM.

Liturgical Discipline: A Crackdown on "Funeral Flamboyance"

In a firm move to restore the solemnity of Catholic burials, Bishop Nwobi issued a stern warning against the growing trend of extravagant funerals. Reaffirming the diocesan funeral laws, the Prelate explicitly banned:

  • The use of horse-drawn carts to convey remains to the Church.
  • Corpse dancing: The practice of pallbearers or undertakers dancing with the casket is now "explicitly and totally forbidden."
  • Convoy Excess: Only one hearse or ambulance is permitted within the Church premises during a funeral; parades of multiple funeral vehicles will no longer be tolerated.

Strategic Roadmap: Cathedral Dedication and Diocesan Synod

Looking toward the future, His Lordship shared several historic milestones on the Diocesan calendar:

  • 2028 Cathedral Dedication: The Mater Ecclesiae Cathedral is scheduled to be dedicated in early 2028, coinciding with the 40th Anniversary of the Diocese.
  • 2029 Diocesan Synod: A Synod has been scheduled for 2029 to further deliberate on the growth and spiritual direction of the Diocese.
  • Provincial Hosting: Ahiara will play host to the Owerri Provincial Priests’ Recollection on May 7, 2026, and the Owerri Provincial Bishops’ Conference in August.

Focus on Evangelization and Formation

The Bishop also highlighted the Diocese's commitment to grassroots evangelization. The Olivet School of Evangelization, under the leadership of Rev. Fr. Dr. Protase Anyanwu, has commenced a specialized two-year program. This initiative aims to train and form catechizers from all 90 parishes and the diocesan chaplaincy, ensuring a well-informed laity.

A Reinvigorated Clergy

The meeting, which involved deep consultations with the priests of the Diocese, concluded with a sense of renewed vigor. By streamlining the path to the priesthood and enforcing stricter liturgical standards, Bishop Nwobi has set a clear course for the "enhanced growth and sustenance" of Ahiara Diocese.
