A Voice Silenced: NUJ Declares Media Blackout as DBS Journalist Vivian Nkechika Dies from Fatal Gas Explosion Injuries

ASABA – The Nigerian media community is in deep mourning following the tragic passing of Vivian Nkechika, a dedicated broadcast journalist with the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba. Her death, which occurred on Wednesday at the Asaba Specialist Hospital, followed a courageous but grueling week-long battle with severe burns sustained in a domestic gas explosion.

​A Somber Silence in the Newsroom

​In an extraordinary show of respect, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, has declared a 12-hour suspension of all media activities. During this period, all NUJ-affiliated platforms will remain silent, with no news stories or updates posted—a move intended to force a moment of collective reflection on the fragility of life and the value of their fallen colleague.

​"Vivian was more than a colleague; she was a friend and a member of our professional family," said Comrade Churchill Oyowe, NUJ State Chairman. "Her loss is painful, shocking, and has left us all deeply bereaved. Life should not go on as though nothing has happened."


​A Community Under Pressure

​The loss of Nkechika is a particularly heavy blow for Delta journalists, coming barely a month after the passing of Matthew Ochei of The Punch Newspaper in early January. This "double tragedy" has cast a dark cloud over the state’s press corps, leaving colleagues to grapple with back-to-back losses of key professional figures.

​Comrade Pere Botu, Chairman of the NUJ DBS Asaba Chapel, described Nkechika as:

Government officials and media veterans alike have characterized her death as a "painful blow" to the industry. The NUJ has called on its members to maintain a mood of solemnity and has urged the public to keep Nkechika’s family in their prayers during this harrowing time.

​The legacy of Vivian Nkechika remains one of commitment and excellence, even as her colleagues now face the difficult task of reporting on a tragedy that has hit so close to home.
