APC Sweeps FCT, Key State Polls as Tinubu Hails Wike’s "Political Dividends"

President Bola Tinubu has officially extended his congratulations to the victors of Saturday’s elections held across the Federal Capital Territory and the states of Kano and Rivers, describing the mandate given to them by the people as a sacred trust. In a statement issued on Sunday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President praised the successful conduct of the polls, which included elections in the six FCT area councils—Abuja Municipal (AMAC), Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji—as well as critical state constituency by-elections in Rivers and Kano.

The election results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show a dominant performance by the All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured victories in the Abaji, Kwali, AMAC, and Bwari Area Councils of the FCT, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) managed a win only in Gwagwalada. The ruling party’s momentum carried into the state by-elections, where the APC recorded clean sweeps for the Ahoada East II and Khana II seats in Rivers State, along with the Ungogo and Kano Municipal State Assembly seats in Kano State.

A significant highlight of the President’s message was his specific commendation of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. President Tinubu attributed the APC’s strong showing in the nation's capital to Wike’s remarkable achievements and leadership, noting that his efforts have yielded tangible political dividends for the governing party. The President further extended his congratulations to the national leadership of the APC, as well as the party’s leadership in Kano and Rivers, for their coordinated efforts in securing these electoral wins.

While the President lauded INEC, security agencies, and the electorate for a peaceful process, the elections were not without challenges. Media reports highlighted a notably low voter turnout, and opposition parties have already raised allegations of unlawful conduct during the exercise. In response to these concerns, the PDP has inaugurated a special legal team to investigate and handle election petitions arising from the FCT Area Council polls.

Despite these tensions, President Tinubu urged all winners to serve with humility, patriotism, and dedication, affirming that the vibrancy of competition only serves to enrich Nigeria’s democracy. He concluded by calling on INEC to remain steadfast in its mission and to continue refining its processes to deliver even more exemplary and transparent elections in the future.
