In a significant transition of leadership for the Church in Nigeria, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has elected a new executive team to steer its affairs. The election took place on February 24, 2026, during the First Plenary Assembly held at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria in Abuja.

The New CBCN Executive Lineup

The bishops have selected a distinguished group of prelates to lead the conference, balancing experience from across Nigeria’s diverse ecclesiastical provinces:

  • President: Most Rev. Matthew Man’oso Ndagoso (Archbishop of Kaduna)
  • Vice President: Most Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins (Archbishop of Lagos)
  • Secretary: Most Rev. Peter Odetoyinbo (Bishop of Abeokuta)
  • Assistant Secretary: Most Rev. Peter Chukwu (Bishop of Abakaliki)

A Comprehensive Mandate

Beyond the principal officers, the election also filled key roles for various directorates, departments, and units within the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) and other CBCN agencies. These leaders will be responsible for coordinating the Church’s social, educational, and spiritual interventions nationwide.

Official Presentation: While the elections have been concluded, the new officers will be formally presented to the public and the faithful during the closing ceremony of the plenary on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.

The announcement was officially released by the Secretary General of the CSN, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Ayanleke Banjo, signaling a new chapter for the hierarchy of the Church in Nigeria as they navigate the contemporary challenges facing the nation.
