BENIN CITY – In a move to strengthen the bond between the government and its citizens, the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has officially appointed Nollywood powerhouse Mercy Johnson-Okojie as the Special Adviser on Public Engagement and Advocacy.

A Strategic Move for Public Relations

The announcement, released on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, highlights a strategic shift toward more transparent and relatable governance. By bringing a household name into the fold, the administration aims to:

  • Boost Public Participation: Encourage citizens to take an active interest in state policies.
  • Bridge the Communication Gap: Use Johnson-Okojie’s massive public influence to translate government initiatives into grassroots impact.
  • Enhance Advocacy: Utilize her existing platform to champion social welfare and civic responsibility.

More Than Just an Actress

While she is widely celebrated for a career spanning 200 films and nearly 20 years, the Edo State government emphasized that her appointment is rooted in her philanthropic track record.

"Johnson-Okojie is an accomplished producer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Through her foundation, she has consistently championed women's empowerment, education, and healthcare outreach." — Musa Ikhilor, SSG.

A Power Couple in Edo Politics

This appointment further cements the Okojie family’s presence in the political landscape of the state. Her husband, Prince Odianosen Okojie, currently represents the Esan North East/South East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

With her new role, Mercy Johnson-Okojie is expected to transition from "Screen Queen" to a vital voice for the people of Edo, ensuring that the government's message doesn't just reach the public, but resonates with them.
