“I Won All 18 LGAs Without Giving Money to a Single Voter” – Oshiomhole Drops Bombshell on Vote Buying
Former Edo State Governor and current Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has ignited a fierce national debate following a bold declaration regarding the integrity of his historic 2012 re-election victory.
Speaking with the trademark candor that defined his time as a labor leader, Oshiomhole revealed that his landmark sweep of all 18 local government areas in Edo State was achieved without spending a single kobo on financial inducements for voters.
This revelation comes as a stinging rebuke to the modern "money politics" era, with Oshiomhole describing electoral malpractice as the ultimate betrayal of democratic values and the "worst crime" possible in a functioning democracy.
Recounting the atmosphere of the 2012 polls, Oshiomhole emphasized that his mandate was built on a foundation of public trust rather than cash transactions.
He recalled telling the electorate at the time that while his opponents might offer them money, they should view such gifts as "no receipt, no refund" transactions, while understanding that he offered something far more valuable: a proven commitment to infrastructure and state development.
To Oshiomhole, the true "beauty of democracy" lies in the legitimacy granted by the people—an inner fulfillment that comes from being chosen by millions to manage their collective resources for the greater good, a feeling he argues is stripped away the moment a vote is bought.
Beyond the moral argument, the Senator issued a stern warning about the legal consequences awaiting those who subvert the will of the people today.
He reminded stakeholders that the law provides stiff penalties for election rigging, noting that presiding officers and INEC officials who manipulate ballot papers face not just heavy fines, but significant jail time. Stressing that the law does not discriminate, he noted that candidates themselves are equally liable for sanctions if found guilty of undermining the process.
As his comments circulate online, they have created a divide between supporters who view his 2012 win as a masterclass in credible leadership and critics who remain skeptical of whether such a feat can be repeated in today's pressurized political climate.
