Lagos CAN Ends 30-Year Wait: Unveils Multimillion-Naira Secretariat Named After First Lady Oluremi Tinubu

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Marking a historic shift for the Christian community in Nigeria’s commercial capital, the Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has officially commissioned its first permanent administrative headquarters. The landmark edifice, located in Alausa, Ikeja, has been named the “Senator Oluremi Tinubu CAN Lagos State Secretariat” in honor of Nigeria’s First Lady.
The commissioning ends nearly three decades of the association operating without a central, owned facility.
The project, which saw its foundation laid on February 17, 2024, was completed under the leadership of Chairman Rt. Rev. S.T.V. Adegbite. Speaking at the ceremony, CAN National President Daniel Okoh praised the Lagos chapter’s "perseverance and commitment," noting that the building stands as a testament to what unity can achieve.
In a message delivered by her representative, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu noted that the completion of the secretariat "ends years of dispute over the land and marks the beginning of a new chapter for Christians in Lagos State."
The secretariat is a multi-structure complex designed to serve as a hub for Christian administration. Several wings and halls within the building honor prominent leaders:
- The Main Office Block: Named after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
- The Chairman’s Office: Named after Senator Tokunbo Abiru.
- The Event Centre: Dedicated as the Bishop Stephen Adegbite Hall.
- Dedicated Floor: A full floor was named in honor of Dr. Oluwaseye Yomi-Sholoye, founder of The New Seraph Evangelical Ministries, for her significant financial contributions.
The event drew a high-profile gathering of religious leaders, including the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Alfred Adewale Martins, and representatives from various denominations. Following the unveiling, the leaders moved to The Apostolic Church Nigeria in Ketu for the 2026 Annual Interdenominational Divine Service.
Under the theme “Immanuel: God With Us,” the clergy offered prayers for Nigeria's national development and urged citizens to remain steadfast despite current economic challenges.
The naming of this secretariat adds to a growing list of public institutions honoring the First Lady since May 2023, alongside the Renewed Hope Resettlement City in Nasarawa and the Oluremi Tinubu Leather Hub in Lagos.
For CAN, however, this building represents a "fit home" and a symbol of administrative strength that will serve the church for generations.
