Oredo LG Boss Crackdown on Illegal Levies; Fast-Tracks Oba Market Reopening
BENIN CITY – In a decisive move to protect small business owners and modernize local commerce, the Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Engr. Gabriel Iduseri, has officially intervened to end the plague of illegal ticketing at Ugbor Market.
During a recent visit, the Chairman provided much-needed clarity on official tolls, while also inspecting the high-tech reconstruction of the historic Oba Market.
Ending the "Illegal Ticket" Menace
Hon. Iduseri sent a clear warning to unauthorized revenue collectors at Ugbor Market, stating that the Council will no longer tolerate the exploitation of traders. To ensure transparency, he outlined the only two legitimate fees approved by the Local Government:
- Waste Management Levies
- Security Levies
The Chairman emphasized that shop allocation is the exclusive mandate of the Local Government Council. He further revealed that a complete overhaul of the revenue system is underway to ensure charges remain minimal and do not place an "undue burden" on the hardworking men and women of Oredo.
"Our goal is a peaceful and safe Oredo where businesses can thrive. We are working in total synergy with the State Government’s 'Project Shine Agenda' under Governor Monday Okpebholo," Iduseri stated.
Oba Market: A Modern, Fire-Resistant Future
Shifting focus to infrastructure, the Chairman inspected the ongoing remodeling of the Oba Market. This project, a flagship intervention by the Edo State Government, is nearing completion.
Site engineers briefed the Chairman on the specialized safety features being integrated into the 60-day fast-track project:
- Fire-Retardant Design: The use of durable concrete decking specifically engineered to prevent the spread of flames.
- On-Site Protection: A dedicated standby fire station to provide immediate response to any future emergencies.
Traders Applaud Proactive Leadership
The Iye-Eki (Market Leader), Mrs. Adesuwa Azonmamwen, expressed the gratitude of the market community. She lauded Governor Monday Okpebholo for the intervention and praised Hon. Iduseri for his "hands-on" approach to resolving long-standing disputes regarding market space and shop allocations.
With the engineers confirming that work is progressing at a rapid pace, the market is expected to be handed back to the traders shortly, ushering in a new era of organized and secure commerce in Benin City.
