The Return of Iyabo: Obasanjo’s Daughter Joins APC, Sets Sights on Ogun Governorship
Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has officially ended her fifteen-year hiatus from active politics by declaring her intention to contest the 2027 governorship race in Ogun State under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The renowned epidemiologist and academic made this high-profile announcement on Saturday during an interactive session on 103.7FM Eagle7 Sports, hosted by Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami.
Her return marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, especially as she moves away from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform under which she previously served as a Commissioner for Health and later as the Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District between 2007 and 2011.
Explaining her choice of the ruling party, the former Senator revealed that the decision followed nearly two years of sustained pressure from her supporters and extensive consultations.
She described the APC as her "natural home," citing deep-seated turmoil within the PDP and the lack of organizational readiness in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as key factors for her choice.
Having recently completed her e-registration at Ibogun, Ward 11, in Ifo Local Government Area, she expressed a total sense of confidence and comfort with the current actors within the APC, asserting that she harbors no animosity toward any group within the party.
After losing her re-election bid in 2011 to Senator Gbenga Obadara, Prof. Obasanjo had retreated to the United States to focus on her academic career, where she achieved the rank of professor.
However, she has now firmly ruled out returning to the Senate or taking up another commissionership, stating emphatically that the governorship is the only office she is interested in pursuing. With a dedicated team already working behind the scenes, she assured the public that her campaign is a serious, committed journey that she intends to see through to the end as the 2027 general elections approach.
