Tragedy at UNILAG: Popular Food Vendor Electrocuted in Freak Campus Accident

Lagos, Nigeria — A cloud of grief has settled over the University of Lagos (UNILAG) following the tragic death of a male food vendor, known locally as Lekan. The incident occurred on Sunday morning at the College of Medicine, Idi-Araba campus, leaving students and staff in a state of shock.

The Incident

Eyewitness accounts suggest the tragedy unfolded around 10:00 a.m. at the "South Side" of the campus. Lekan had reportedly gone to a water point to wash his hands after disposing of waste. In a horrific turn of events, he allegedly held onto a metal railing near the tap and was immediately struck by a high-voltage surge.

A student, speaking on the condition of anonymity, noted that the victim was alone when the surge occurred. It was a campus security operative who noticed the emergency and raised the alarm, drawing a crowd to the scene.

The Battle to Save a Life

The UNILAG Students’ Union Government (SUG) Secretary-General, Joshua Saanumi, confirmed the details of the incident. In a desperate bid to save his life, bystanders and students performed CPR for approximately 10 minutes.

While Lekan briefly regained consciousness during the rescue attempt, he was rushed to the university’s Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit, where he was tragically confirmed dead.

Official Investigation

The University Management, through a statement by the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, expressed "heartfelt condolences" to the victim's family.

  • Police Presence: Operatives of the state police command have visited the scene and the hospital.
  • Technical Assessment: University engineers were deployed to assess the railing and tap area.
  • Preliminary Findings: While the area is regularly used by students and security staff, authorities are investigating what caused the sudden electrical fault in the metal structure.

The University has urged the public to refrain from speculation as official investigations continue, asserting that the safety of the campus community remains their "highest priority."
