Diplomatic Blunder: ADC Slams Tinubu Administration Over ‘Amateur’ Ambassadorial Postings

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has issued a stinging rebuke of the Federal Government’s recent announcement regarding ambassadorial postings, labeling the move a massive diplomatic blunder that threatens to expose Nigeria to international embarrassment and weaken its standing on the global stage. In a sharply worded statement released on Friday, March 6, 2026, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration of a fundamental lack of understanding regarding international protocol.

The core of the controversy stems from the government’s decision to publicize the postings before securing the formal consent, known as agrément, from the host countries—a move the ADC argues directly violates Article 4 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. By "putting the cart before the horse," the ADC contends that the administration has ignored the standard practice of handling such requests quietly through diplomatic channels to avoid public humiliation should a nominee be rejected after a host country conducts its due diligence.

Beyond the procedural errors, the opposition party raised alarms over the glaring gaps in the announcement, noting that while Nigeria maintains 109 diplomatic missions worldwide, only 65 ambassadors were designated, leaving 44 critical posts vacant during a period of intense global uncertainty. The ADC questioned the government's silence on the mission to the United States and pointed to a pattern of previous missteps, including premature announcements regarding the UK and France, and the nomination of an unscreened envoy to Turkey.

With only 449 days remaining in its term, the administration was characterized by the ADC as being more responsive to domestic political pressure than the requirements of professional governance. The party warned that this perceived incompetence risks silencing Nigeria’s voice in high-level global discussions at a time when the country most needs to be at the table.
