BENIN CITY – In a poignant celebration of the 2026 International Women’s Day, the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State Chapter, brought warmth and relief to the Catholic Home of the Elderly on Airport Road this Friday.

Under the global theme "Give to Gain," the association pivoted from traditional festivities to a mission of charity, delivering essential food items and toiletries to the residents of the facility managed by St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Bridging the Generational Gap:

The delegation, led by State Chairperson Comrade Habiba Sam, emphasized that the visit was designed to illuminate the "twilight years" of the residents.

"We are here to ensure you are seen and remembered," Comrade Sam noted during the presentation. "Our hope is that this visit brings a sense of renewed hope and joy, making this day as remarkable for you as it is for us."

A Century of Blessings:

The highlight of the afternoon was a deeply moving encounter with the home’s oldest resident, 111-year-old Mrs. Comfort Solomon. Despite her advanced age, Mrs. Solomon offered fervent prayers for the journalists, a gesture that underscored the emotional weight of the "Give to Gain" initiative.

A Call to Advocacy:

While the Archbishop of Benin currently sponsors the total welfare and medical care of the residents, the facility’s management stressed the need for wider community support. Receiving the items on behalf of the Directress, Rev. Sister Gloria Ochei, caregiver Mrs. Rose John urged the journalists to use their professional voices for a higher purpose.

Key areas of need identified by the Home include:

  • Public Awareness: Letting the community know the facility exists.
  • Medical & Nutritional Support: Supplementing the Archbishop’s existing sponsorship.
  • Social Interaction: Encouraging visits to combat the isolation of the aged.

Impact and Commitment

The visit concluded with the distribution of foodstuffs and essential toiletries. By choosing to celebrate International Women's Day through service, Edo NAWOJ has set a precedent for corporate social responsibility, proving that the most powerful stories are often those written through acts of kindness.
