​GOUNI Shines at 2026 Cathedraticum: A ₦45 Million Testament to Faith and Excellence

​ENUGU, NIGERIA — In a stunning display of institutional growth and spiritual commitment, Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) has once again solidified its position as a leader in the Catholic community. During the 2026 Cathedraticum held at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, the university was officially recognized as the 1st Place winner of the 2025 cycle, punctuated by a record-breaking donation of ₦45 million to the Diocese.

​A Legacy of Generosity

​The announcement, delivered by the Diocesan Financial Administrator, Very Rev. Fr. Sylvanus Ugwu, was met with a standing ovation from the gathered faithful. The university’s delegation, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Prof. Christian Anieke, represented a unified front of principal officers, priests, staff, and students.

​While GOUNI took the top spot, other parishes also demonstrated remarkable dedication:

  • ​Holy Trinity Parish: 1st Runner-up
  • ​Christ the King Parish: 2nd Runner-up

​The Bishop’s Charge: 5 Pillars for a Renewed Faith

​Beyond the financial milestones, the Most Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, Bishop of Enugu, utilized the gathering to issue a series of vital directives and spiritual reminders aimed at strengthening the moral and social fabric of the Diocese.

​1. Dignity in Mourning

​In a significant policy shift, the Bishop announced the extension of burial rites from four weeks to eight weeks. This change is designed to alleviate the pressure on grieving families, ensuring they have adequate time for preparation and a dignified farewell for their loved ones.

​2. A Return to Integrity

​Bishop Onaga issued a stern call for the "rejection of dishonesty." He urged the faithful to move away from the "get-rich-quick" or deceptive tendencies of the modern era and return to a life of sincere Christian living.

​3. Marian Devotion

​The University and the wider community were encouraged to deepen their spiritual lives through the Rosary. By following the example of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Bishop noted, the faithful can find the strength to navigate contemporary challenges.

​4. Soldiers of Christ

​Reminding the congregation of their identity, the Bishop described every member of the church as a “foot soldier of Christ,” tasked with defending the faith through both words and actions in their daily lives.

​5. Spiritual & Economic Self-Sufficiency

​Addressing the harsh economic reality of rising food costs, the Bishop advocated for a practical solution: Farming. He encouraged the community to embrace agriculture to ensure self-sufficiency and food security.

​The 2026 Cathedraticum was more than a ceremony of donation; it was a reflection of the "Go-Uni" spirit—a blend of academic excellence and deep-rooted faith. Under the leadership of Fr.
