House of Assembly Suspends Lawmaker After Alleged Brutal Assault on Wife
-By Ruben Mario BrodrickCALABAR – The Cross River State House of Assembly has taken a decisive stand against domestic violence, placing Hon. Dickson Ovat Agbor on an indefinite suspension. The lawmaker, representing the Obubra I State Constituency, was sidelined following disturbing allegations that he physically assaulted his wife, Mrs. Glory Agbor.
A Call for Legislative Integrity
The move for suspension unfolded during a high-stakes plenary session on Thursday, March 5, 2026. The motion was brought forward by Hon. Davies Etta and supported by Hon. Francis Bassey Asuquo, both of whom argued that the private conduct of a public official cannot be separated from the prestige of the House.
While presenting the motion, Etta denounced the alleged incident in no uncertain terms. He described the lawmaker’s actions as conduct "wholly inconsistent" with the ethical standards expected of an elected representative.
"Lawmakers are duty-bound to act in ways that reflect the confidence reposed in them by their constituents," Etta noted. "The legislature must safeguard its image and uphold the very principles of justice and protection it was built to provide."
Immediate Sanctions and Probe
Following a series of intense deliberations, the House reached a consensus to bar Hon. Agbor from all legislative duties effective immediately. To ensure a fair but thorough process, an ad hoc committee was established to probe the allegations and provide a comprehensive report for further action.
A Dramatic Exit
The tension in the Chambers reached a peak when the resolution was passed. Hon. Agbor, who was present during the debate, was formally escorted out of the Chambers by security and legislative staff. He remains suspended from all official functions pending the final outcome of the investigation.
