Mercy Over Malice: Archbishop Akubeze Calls for Justice, an End to “Social Media Trials” at 2026 Cathedraticum
OKADA, EDO STATE – Amidst an atmosphere of deep spiritual reflection and communal joy, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, has called on the Christian faithful to become beacons of truth in a world increasingly clouded by misinformation and hasty judgment.
Presiding over the 2026 Iguobazuwa Deanery Cathedraticum at the Archangel Gabriel Catholic Church, Okada, on Monday, March 23, the Archbishop delivered a poignant homily that bridged ancient scripture with the pressing challenges of the digital age.
A Heroic Welcome: Fr. Brodricks Hails the "Shepherd of Souls"
The day’s proceedings commenced with a stirring welcome address by the Dean of Iguobazuwa Deanery, Very Rev. Fr. Benjamin Amieghomwan Brodricks. Speaking with profound gratitude to Almighty God and deep filial reverence, Fr. Brodricks extended a warm reception to the Archbishop and his esteemed entourage, which included the Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Augustine Ehigie, the Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Oyanoafoh, and other members of the Archdiocesan Curia.
Fr. Brodricks described the visit as a historic "moment of grace" for the entire Iguobazuwa family. He lauded the Archbishop's leadership, noting that his presence brought a "renewed sense of hope and spiritual fortification" to the deanery.
"Your Grace," Fr. Brodricks noted, "it is with hearts full of joy that the priests, religious, and the entire lay faithful—our dedicated men, women, and vibrant youth—welcome you today. We recognize in you the tireless apostolic zeal that has seen this Archdiocese flourish. We stand here today not just to present our gifts, but to reaffirm our unwavering loyalty and commitment to the mission of Christ under your fatherly guidance."
He further acknowledged the diverse groups present, from the Knights and Ladies of various Orders to the security and media personnel, emphasizing that the unity of the Deanery is a reflection of the Archbishop’s own vision for a collaborative and inclusive Church.
The "Daniel" Mandate: Confronting Modern Injustice
Responding to this warm reception, Archbishop Akubeze centered his message on the biblical story of Susanna—who narrowly escaped execution following a conspiracy by corrupt elders—and the contemporary phenomenon of "cancel culture."
“We must be especially careful in an age of ‘social media justice’,” the Prelate cautioned. “There is a growing temptation to assume that whatever is trending must be true. But not everything that trends is truthful, and not everything that trends is just.”
He lamented how false accusations circulated online have ruined the reputations of many "Susannas" of our time. In a direct charge to the youth, he urged them to be "Daniels"—wise seekers of truth who refuse to follow the flow of the crowd. He emphasized that a healthy society is one where the young are not just told the future belongs to them, but are empowered to contribute meaningfully to the present.
A Theology of Transformation
Reflecting on the Gospel of the woman caught in adultery, the Archbishop highlighted the "sacred silence" between human misery and divine mercy. He noted the hypocrisy of the accusers who manipulated the law, pointing out that while adultery involves two people, only the woman was brought forward.
“Jesus’ response did not abolish the law; it challenged the moral authority of the accusers,” the Archbishop explained. Quoting St. Augustine, he reminded the faithful that when the stone-throwers departed, "there remained only two: misery and mercy." He urged the Church to adopt this heart of Christ: to condemn the sin while tirelessly working to save and restore the sinner.
A Legacy of Growth and Gratitude
The 2026 Cathedraticum marked significant personal milestones for the Archbishop: 39 years of priesthood, 20 years as a Bishop, and 15 years of shepherding the Archdiocese of Benin City.
He cited the "remarkable growth" visible throughout the region:
- The dedication of new churches and creation of parishes.
- The surge in priestly ordinations and commissioned catechists.
- The increasing number of youths and infants receiving the Sacraments.
The Prelate also paid a glowing tribute to the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, for his immense generosity in building many of the facilities in Okada. He urged all priests to constantly offer Masses for the intentions of the Igbinedion family as a token of spiritual gratitude.
Festive Thanksgiving and Closing Charge
The highlight of the day was the Special Thanksgiving, a colorful display of solidarity where parishes, chaplaincies, religious congregations, and various organizations—including the CWO, CMO, and CYON—processed with joy to support the Archbishop’s mission.
In his final charge, Archbishop Akubeze reminded the faithful that peace is the fruit of justice. "Work for justice in your family. Work for justice in society. Work for justice in the Church," he mandated. "Wherever justice flourishes, peace will follow."
