In Faithful Surrender: Abakaliki Diocese Mourns the Transition of Beloved Bishop Peter Chukwu to Eternal Glory at 60
ABAKALIKI – The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki and the global community of the faithful are in deep mourning following the transition of their revered Shepherd, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, who returned to his Maker on Friday, April 10, 2026. He was 60 years old.
The announcement, released with a spirit of "total surrender to God and firm faith in the Resurrection," marks the end of an impactful era for the Church in Ebonyi State. Bishop Chukwu was known not only as a spiritual leader but as a scholar and a voice of conscience for his people.
A Legacy of Faith and Intellect
Born on November 5, 1965, Bishop Chukwu dedicated over three decades to the priesthood. Before his appointment as the third Bishop of Abakaliki by Pope Francis in 2021, he distinguished himself as a brilliant academic and a compassionate pastor.
- Scholarly Service: He held a Doctorate in Philosophy from Marquette University and served as a lecturer at Ebonyi State University.
- Pastoral Care: He served in numerous roles, including Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s, Nduruku-Amagu, and Spiritual Director for the Sisters of Jesus the Good Shepherd.
- A Voice of Integrity: He was widely respected for his principles, once notably declining a state award to remain aligned with his pastoral mission and the realities of his flock.
The Diocesan Tribute
In an official statement, the Diocese expressed the collective grief of the clergy and lay faithful:
"We commiserate with the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki over the demise of their beloved Bishop. May he find peace with our Saviour and rise with Him on the Resurrection morning. Amen."
United in Hope
While the loss is profound, the message echoing through the Cathedral of St. Theresa is one of hope. The faithful are called to remain "united in prayers" for God’s consolation over this sad loss, leaning on the Bishop’s own motto of total devotion to the divine will.
As the Diocese prepares for the final rites of passage, the sentiment across Nigeria remains clear: "Rest in peace, Bishop Peter Chukwu. We love you, but God loves you more!"
