Passion Turns Painful: Law Student Hospitalized After Grueling 'Jesus' Reenactment in Uganda

The solemnity of Good Friday took a harrowing turn at Our Lady of Africa Church in Mbuya, Uganda, when a dramatic reenactment of the Passion of Christ resulted in the real-world hospitalization of its lead actor.

Dennis Zziwa, a second-year law student at Kampala International University, found himself at the center of a medical emergency after the physical demands of portraying Jesus Christ during the "Way of the Cross" procession escalated beyond mere performance.

As the congregation gathered to witness the spiritual commemoration, the intensity of the scenes—intended to mirror the suffering of Christ—reportedly led to Zziwa sustaining significant injuries from the staged beatings. What began as a devout portrayal of faith quickly turned into a crisis as the physical toll of the "scourging" left the student incapacitated.

Red Cross personnel, who were stationed at the event to manage the large crowds, were forced to intervene immediately, providing crucial first aid as the procession came to an abrupt and somber halt.

Recognizing the severity of his condition, emergency responders transferred Zziwa from the church grounds to Lamone Health Center in Luzira. He remains under professional medical observation as doctors assess the extent of the trauma sustained during the performance.

While passion plays are a cornerstone of Easter traditions worldwide, this incident has sparked a local conversation regarding the safety and physical limits of realistic religious reenactments, leaving the community to pray for the recovery of the young man who took his role perhaps too much to heart.
