Shadow Over Easter: Terrorists Descend on Kaduna Churches in Deadly Holiday Raid

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The sanctity of Easter Sunday was shattered in the early hours of this morning as heavily armed terrorists stormed the Ariko community in the Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State, turning a day of celebration into one of profound mourning. Worshippers at the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) and St. Augustine Catholic Church found themselves caught in a terrifying siege when gunmen surrounded the area, opening fire indiscriminately on those gathered for prayer.

The assault, which has left the community in a state of shock and agony, resulted in the confirmed deaths of at least seven people, though local officials fear the toll could rise as they continue to verify reports from the scene. Mark Bawa, the councillor representing Awon Ward, described a scene of chaos where attackers arrived in massive numbers, overwhelming the rural enclave and forcibly abducting an unknown number of worshippers into the dense surrounding bushland.

The tragedy has reignited a firestorm of concern regarding the vulnerability of rural Kaduna and the persistent failure of timely security interventions. Residents lamented that the terrorists operated for a significant period without any form of resistance, a delay exacerbated by the region’s notoriously poor telecommunications, which prevented locals from calling for help as the violence unfolded. While the community waits for an official statement from the Kaduna State Police Command, the silence from authorities has only deepened the sense of abandonment felt by those now left to bury their dead and pray for the safe return of the missing.
