Bloodshed at UNIBEN: Governor Okpebholo Vows Justice After ‘Cold-Blooded’ Daylight Execution
BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has issued a stern warning to criminal elements following a horrific shooting that claimed the life of a young man right at the doorstep of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).
A Brazen Assault on Public Safety
The tranquility of Sunday was shattered when gunmen launched a daring, daylight attack near the university’s main gate. The victim was shot dead in a manner the Governor described as "brazen and cold-blooded"—a chilling act of violence that has left the local community in shock.
In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, Governor Okpebholo made it clear that his administration views the killing not just as a crime, but as a direct challenge to the state's authority.
"The killing on a day regarded as sacred by many is an affront to human dignity and a threat to public safety," the Governor stated. "It is completely unacceptable. They may run, but they cannot hide forever."
Security Crackdown and Investigation
While extending his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, Okpebholo assured the public that the Edo State Police Command has already hit the ground running. Security agencies, including the DSS and the Nigerian Army, are currently coordinating to track down the perpetrators.
The Governor highlighted that this incident reinforces the urgency of his administration’s ongoing war against cult-related violence. Key highlights of the state's security strategy include:
- Intensified Operations: Increased patrols in high-risk communities to intercept and prosecute suspected cultists.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Active engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society to identify threats before they escalate.
- Youth Rehabilitation: Ongoing support for programmes designed to steer vulnerable youths away from the lure of cultism.
"No Sanctuary for Criminals"
Governor Okpebholo closed his address with a defiant message, asserting that Edo State will never become a safe haven for terrorists or those who carry illegal arms.
The state government is now calling on the public to come forward. Anyone with information regarding the Sunday shooting is encouraged to contact security agencies, with a firm guarantee that all tips will be handled with the strictest confidentiality.
