BENIN CITY – It was an atmosphere of pure joy, spiritual rejuvenation, and vibrant celebration as St. Augustine Catholic Parish, Benin City, joined the rest of the nation to mark the 2026 National Children’s Day on Wednesday, May 27th.
The memorable event, which was powered by the Catholic Women Organisation (CWO) under the leadership of its President, Mrs. Mary Ojo, kicked off with a holy mass and culminated in a grand social reception filled with thrilling activities for the kids.
"You Are Highly Appreciated" — Clergy Charge Children to Be Pillars of Peace
The spiritual foundation of the day was laid during the Holy Mass, chief-celebrated by the Parish Priest.
Delivering a heartwarming homily, the Bussa of the Augustinian Community in Benin City, Rev. Fr. Ikemerika Azubike, OSA, reminded the children of their immense value to both their families and the Church.
Reflecting on the innate joy a newborn brings into the world, Fr. Azubike stated:
"As you are being celebrated by your parents and by the church, know that you are highly appreciated. God made you to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this world, and to be happy with Him in the next. Love yourself so as to make your parents proud, and never be shy to keep the spirit of the Lord lively."
Drawing from the day’s Gospel story about the ambitious sons of Zebedee, the cleric urged the children to embrace humility and service, noting that "whoever must be great must be a servant." He further advised them to be considerate of their siblings and peers whenever making requests.
Corroborating this message, the Parish Priest admonished the children to shun all forms of fighting and violence, urging them to always embrace peace and harmony with their friends.
Honor Your Parents for Long Life — Special Guest
The social segment of the celebration was graced by the Special Guest of Honour, Mrs. Rosy Gaius-Obaseki, wife of the former Group Managing Director of the NNPC.
Addressing the energetic gathering, Mrs. Gaius-Obaseki emphasized the golden virtue of obedience. She reminded the children that honoring their parents is the only commandment in the Bible that comes with a divine promise—the reward of a long and prosperous life.
A Spectacular Display of Talent and Fun
After the spiritual nourishment, the venue erupted into a carnival-like atmosphere as the children showcased their talents.
The social event featured high-energy activities, including:
Inter-Zonal Dancing Competition: A fierce but friendly dance-off featuring children representing the six distinct zones of the parish.
"Draw Your Sword": A fast-paced, thrilling Bible quotation game that tested the children's scriptural knowledge.
Dramatic Presentations: Inspiring short plays put together by the talented youth.
Gift Presentations & Free Speeches: Moments of recognition where the children expressed themselves freely and walked away with exciting prizes.
The 2026 Children's Day celebration at St. Augustine Parish undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the hearts of the younger generation, combining deep spiritual lessons with unforgettable fun.
