Mission: Abudu Deanery Ignites Spiritual Awakening at Benin Provincial Evangelization Outreach Finale

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The atmosphere at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Abudu was charged with spiritual fervor on May 9, 2026, as the Benin Provincial Evangelization Week reached a powerful crescendo.

Presided over by the Dean of Abudu Deanery, Very Rev. Fr. James Chima (Okosisi), the Thanksgiving Mass served as both a celebration of faith and a strategic launching pad for the divine mandate of spreading the Gospel.

The gathering brought together the faithful in a stirring conclusion to a week dedicated to outreach, emphasizing that the call to evangelize is not merely an option but a fundamental obligation for every believer.

Delivering a potent message rooted in the Great Commission, Rev. Fr. Everest Nwankwo, Parish Priest of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Idokpa, drew from Mark 16:15 to remind the congregation of Christ’s direct command: "Go ye into the world and preach the Gospel."

Fr. Nwankwo stressed that this mandate is the primary reason for the Church's existence, noting that when believers prioritize this mission, they unlock the promise found in Matthew 28:20—that Christ will remain with them until the end of the age.

He did not shy away from the realities of the mission field, acknowledging that the path of evangelization is often paved with difficulties and opposition.

Citing John 15:18, he prepared the faithful for the inevitability of persecution, reminding them that since the world persecuted Christ, his followers should expect no less.

However, he balanced this sober warning with the triumphant assurance that Christ has already conquered the world, urging the people to remain focused on the One who sent them to ensure their ultimate victory.

The cleric further expanded on the spiritual rewards of this labor, noting that as the Gospel expands, the presence of the Holy Spirit becomes more tangible on earth.

He issued a stirring dual challenge based on 1 Corinthians 9:16: while St. Paul declared "woe to me if I do not preach the gospel," Fr. Nwankwo added that there is an equal "woe" for those whose lifestyles contradict the very message they proclaim.

He insisted that evangelization must be a fusion of words and actions, where every believer becomes a living representative of Christ in their daily environments. This call to integrity served as the foundation for the outreach's high point—a vigorous, soul-searching "walk for Christ" through the various communities surrounding Abudu.

As the province concluded its scheduled activities, the message remained clear: the mission to carry the Gospel to the ends of the earth continues, fueled by the promise of divine presence and the pursuit of a life that mirrors the message of the Cross.
