The End of an Era: Media Visionary and CNN Founder Ted Turner Passes Away at 87

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

The world has lost one of its most audacious pioneers. Ted Turner, the swashbuckling billionaire who tore up the rulebook of modern broadcasting and taught the world to watch news in real-time, has passed away at the age of 87. Turner, who famously disclosed his battle with Lewy body dementia in 2018, leaves behind a legacy that is etched into every glowing screen across the globe.

Long before the internet made instant information a commodity, Turner had a "crazy" idea: news shouldn’t have an expiration date or a bedtime. In 1980, against a tide of industry skepticism, he launched CNN, the world’s first 24-hour news network. He didn't just create a channel; he created a global pulse, turning local events into international milestones and forever changing how humanity experiences history as it unfolds.

Born Robert Edward Turner III in 1938, his journey began in the billboard business, but his ambitions were far too large for static signs. From transforming a struggling Atlanta UHF station into the nation's first "superstation" to founding staples of American culture like TNT and Cartoon Network, Turner was a master of the media pivot. He played the game of business with the same competitive fire he brought to the sports world as the owner of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Hawks.

Yet, for all his corporate conquests, Turner’s heart was often pinned to his sleeve and his checkbook. A titan of philanthropy, he stunned the world in 1996 with a historic $1 billion pledge to the United Nations, a move that signaled his shift from media mogul to global humanitarian. He spent his final decades championing the planet, advocating for nuclear disarmament, and preserving the wilderness he so dearly loved.

Ted Turner was a man of contradictions—a fierce competitor who sought global peace, a billionaire who gave away fortunes, and a media giant who believed in the power of truth. As the curtains close on a life lived at full throttle, the 24-hour news cycle he birthed continues to spin, a relentless, flickering tribute to a man who refused to believe that the world ever stops turning.
