ZARIA, NIGERIA — With a heavy heart but total submission to the divine will of Almighty God, the Catholic Diocese of Zaria announces the peaceful transition into eternal glory of one of its dedicated shepherds, Very Rev. Fr. Lawrence Bakut.

The sad event occurred in the early hours of Sunday, June 7, 2026, at approximately 2:00 am. Fr. Bakut passed away at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Hospital in Zaria, where he had been receiving medical care following a protracted illness, which he bore with great faith and priestly fortitude.

Fr. Bakut’s passing leaves a profound void in the presbyterium of Zaria Diocese, where he served selflessly for many years, touching countless lives through his pastoral ministry, spiritual guidance, and commitment to the Gospel.

In an official statement issued from the Office of the Chancellor, the Catholic Bishop of Zaria extended his deepest, heartfelt condolences to the immediate members of the Bakut family, as well as to the friends, parishioners, and colleagues who grieve this immense loss.

"Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen."

The Diocese warmly enjoins all the Catholic faithful, religious communities, and well-wishers to unite in fervent prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul and for comfort for his grieving family.

According to the Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Augustine Isek, official information regarding the vigil mass, funeral rites, and burial arrangements will be finalized and communicated to the public in due course.
